WHERE WE WILL BEGIN

Let’s begin by exploring how our memories and our imagination influence one another. How do they impact your creativity? I’ve heard some say that as you grow older you have more memory to deal with and less room for imagination. I heard others say that the more memories you have the sharper your imagination becomes. How about you?

• Woodshed

What’s woodshedding? It’s what all musicians (as well as poets and dancers) should be doing on a regular

basis to sharpen your voice.  Please find time to include some listening in your woodshedding process.

Here are some things I’d like you to listen to prior to Feb. 8.

• Learning How to Listen – Abby Lincoln

• Afro-Blue – compare John Coltrane’s version to Robert Glasper’s

• Starmaker – Roy Hargrove

Who do you think he is referring to as the Starmaker?
What role do you think each instrument is playing in the process of making stars?

• Little Boy and Water From an Ancient World – Abdullah Ibrahim
Who would you compare Abdullah’s voice to?
